TELSTRA WORKERS VOTE TO CONTINUE ACTION
At a mass meeting and protest rally outside Telstra’s main telephone shop in Melbourne today, Telstra workers voted unanimously to continue their campaign of strikes, bans and other disruptions to Telstra’s operation, in order to win a new enterprise agreement.
Marching through the CBD in Melbourne, Telstra workers demanded equal pay with the non-unionists in Telstra, and demanded that Telstra Management start to treat its unionised employees with dignity and respect.
The protest rally was given support by the Greens candidate for the federal seat of Melbourne Adam Bandt and a pledge of solidarity from the ETU Secretary Dean Mighell.
The rally called on the ACTU and the entire union movement to back the Telstra workers in their campaign to defeat Telstra’s attempts to discriminate against its unionised workers.
Victorian Secretary Len Cooper said “that the union’s Telstra members are determined to fight on, and as a result Telstra’s day-to-day operations will be affected detrimentally. The alternative is for Telstra to stop its discrimination and settle the long-running dispute.”
